Leaf Mulch

The cold and wind have now stripped the trees bare of leaves here in Northern Virginia. Uncle Pete found this analysis of leaf mulch at the Arlington County, VA web site and it is an appropriate time to share. Click to enlarge for easier reading.

Notice that the sample date is 9/04/2013. This  leaf mulch sample is probably close to one year old. The ph is 6.6 and might be a little lower (more acidic) if the sample had been fresher. Also notice all the micronutrients (trace elements). These are beneficial to the trees overall health and might not be found in commonly used fertilizers. This should give you a good idea of what is actually in mulch, although a sample from your area would be slightly different depending on the composition of material.

Have Fun!
