Raffle Ficus

Raffle ficus A club member moved and donated a few items to the club which were raffled off at our last meeting. I won this tree.

Raffle ficus 2 This Ficus had years of mineral buildup on the lower trunk and nebari. I cleaned it up using a diluted vinegar solution (10 parts water to 1 part vinegar) and a toothbrush. The acid in the vinegar breaks down the mineral deposits. I used 100% vinegar to remove mineral deposits on the pot.

Raffle ficus 3 After about an hour of scrubbing I had gotten most of the buildup off. I pulled the tree from the pot and removed the pumice potting mix. I then rinsed off any vinegar residue and put the tree back in the same pot with my preferred mix of lava and pine bark.

Raffle ficus 4 I wired the branches to give them a little movement. Defoliation and further shaping will come later when the tree is showing signs of vigorous growth. Not a prize winning tree, but not bad for a $1 raffle ticket.

Have fun!
